The tradition of raising the Gudi is an important ritual performed during the festival of Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year, especially in Maharashtra. The Gudi symbolizes victory, prosperity, and good fortune, and it is believed to invite positive energy and blessings into the home.

Gudi Padwa is celebrated on first day of the “Chaitra” month. Gudhi Padwa is celebrated throughout the Maharashtra. This festival is remarkable because it has a number of legends and stories associated with it. This festival indicates the beginning of the traditional Indian New Year.

According to tradition, the Gudi should be placed outside the main entrance of the house, preferably on the right side, which represents auspiciousness and active spiritual energy. Before raising the Gudi, the selected area is cleaned and decorated with a Swastik rangoli. Turmeric (haldi) and vermilion (kumkum) are applied at the center of the rangoli to make the place sacred.

A bamboo stick is used as the base for the Gudi. A clean and new cloth or sari is tied to the bamboo along with flowers, neem leaves, and sugar garlands. These elements represent purity, health, and sweetness in life. An inverted copper or silver kalash (gadu) is placed on the top, which completes the traditional Gudi.

The bamboo is placed in a plate or container filled with rice grains for stability, and a sweet offering such as Puran Poli is offered as prasad. Once prepared, the decorated Gudi is raised outside the house entrance.

Raising the Gudi during Gudi Padwa is believed to bring happiness, success, prosperity, and protection to the household. It is a beautiful way to celebrate the festival while honoring cultural traditions and welcoming the new year with positivity.
