Origin of Shivling

Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu attempted to discover its beginning and end, but the pillar was without limit. This story represents Shiva as eternal, limitless and beyond physical form.
The Shivling is also traditionally worshipped together with the Yoni, representing the complementary principles of Shiva and Shakti, or consciousness and divine creative energy.
